Creating healthy food the tastes delicious and looks great is no easy task. But Susanna Bingemer manages to do the impossible. In her blog Eat Sleep Green, she gives recipes and life tips for a healthy lifestyle. Here is what she had to say when we sat down to interview her-
When did you decide to turn your life around and live a healthy lifestyle?
As a food journalist I always write about food subjects and I’m especially interested in food trends. Around 15 years ago I wrote my first articles and whole magazines about subjects like “vegetarism”, “eating well” and so on. Since I do a lot of research for every subject and do a kind of “method acting” (which means: when I write for example about rawfood I eat rawfood for a couple of weeks/ months…) I learned a lot about healthy nutrition and what its does with my body. That’s why slowly I also changed my private lifestyle.
Is there one particular health diet that you prefer over any other?
I would say I practice a kind of “clean eating” but without meat and fish. Today I’m vegetarian and I just eat very tiny amounts of a few animal products like cheese or eggs.
How do you come up with your healthy recipes? It’s hard finding healthy food that tastes good!
I get inspirations from everywhere: from restaurants, cook books, Instagram, magazines, my friends, my husband… Sometimes for example I eat a nice dish and then I try to make a healthy version out of it – vegetarian, less fat, natural sweetener instead of white sugar….
Your husband, as you said, is a chef. Does he have a lot of influence on your recipes and your blog?
Not on my blog but on my recipes. We speak a lot about food, dishes and recipes. And when I have a recipe idea in my mind I often discuss it with him. Or sometimes he speaks about a certain ingredient which inspires me to create a recipe out of it. And for him it’s the same with me. Since he is a carnivore we also create sometimes a normal (him) and a (me) version out of the same idea.
When did you decide to create your blog and share your food with the world?
It was in summer 2014. And I went online with my blog in summer 2015, just before my first book on superfoods came out.
You also write about sleep on your blog. What about the subject fascinates you?
Like eating, sleeping is something which we all do, which we all need. When we do both in a good and healthy way it helps us a lot to restore our mind and body. I’m also fascinated about this subject because sleep can be a link to another world: to our unconscious. And sleep can be just so comforting.
When you feel bad, physically or mentally, it helps you so much to fall asleep and after a good sleep you certainly feel better. But many people have problems to sleep. And so I find it important to speak and write about the best ways to sleep – which certainly are not always the same for everybody. I always was a “good” but very sensitive sleeper. I fall asleep very quickly but I wake up often when there is noise or when I feel uncomfortable.
Where do you see your blog headed in the future?
During the last year I was very much concentrated on my Instagram feed to promote my blog. Now I want to concentrate more on my blog again. And I want to write more about the “sleep” subject, which I haven’t done so much lately.
