“I see my self trying to use fashion as a tool to get a message out to the public, and help make the world a better place.”
You’ll never find a more clean look than Runa Ray’s designs. Creating looks based on Origami and the planet, her designs are far from ordinary. Closing off New York Fashion Week, she has spread her design globally. She shared her story with us in this exclusive interview-
How was New York Fashion Week? That’s an amazing experience!
NYFW for me is the mecca of fashion…A conglomeration of artists, designers, architects, musicians…Its a place where people of all art forms get together and enjoy a spectacle, of which I try to have a message imbibed.
You studied in Paris for two years and also in India! What made you decide to study there?
I won the best design collection award at India’s top Fashion Academy NIFT and was torn between Paris and the US for my further studies…I decided to go ahead with Paris, understand the European style of designing and of course learn a new language.
Did anyone inspire you to take up fashion as a career?
I was always into art as a child and this trait was recognized by my mother who decided to steer me in the direction of the arts and found that Fashion was a great opportunity for me to experiment and learn…
You’ve made so many achievements with your fashion! Have you had any support along the way?
One always needs support, whether it is emotional, physical or monetary. Fashion is hard work and yes this is a process that definitely needs support.
What made you decide to reuse old items for your clothing?
I did not reuse old clothing but used actual plant material for dyes and printing such as the chlorophyll from the leaves.
Where do you see yourself taking your fashion in the future?
I see my self trying to use fashion as a tool to get a message out to the public, and help make the world a better place.
