“This is why I challenge myself to continue practicing this genre of makeup and post it on Instagram as a way to keep track of my progress. My goal is always to be better than myself yesterday.”
Mimi Choi is an exceptional makeup artist with a flare for creative illusionist creations. Her Instagram is full of these amazing designs and more. In the spirit of Halloween, we spoke to Mimi about her amazing makeup skills and her illusionist makeup art. Here is what she told us-
When did you decide that makeup was your passion?
Before I became a makeup artist 4 years ago, I was a preschool Montessori teacher with no art training at all. However, I always appreciated and enjoyed creating arts and craft. I’ve also always done my own makeup and have been complimented for it, so I decided to study makeup at Blanche Macdonald (a local makeup and beauty school here in Vancouver) to explore my other passions with the support of my family.
How did you become an illusionist? Those photos are so interesting!
I got into extreme illusion makeup during Halloween 2013. I wanted to do something different with makeup for Halloween instead of wearing a typical costume, and I decided to test out a cracked face design using just black and white eyeliners. It was my first ever creative makeup and when I posted the image on Instagram, lots of people liked, reposted and shared it on Pinterest, Facebook, and online forums. That surprised me and motivated me to keep exploring and improving on this style even though it was uncommon at the time. I figured if I could do an impactful and realistic-looking illusion, I would be able to perfect winged eyeliner and beauty looks as well. This is why I challenge myself to continue practicing this genre of makeup and post it on Instagram as a way to keep track of my progress. My goal is always to be better than myself yesterday. 4 years later, my art has become what it is now.
Halloween time is just around the corner. Do you ever get any crazy requests for illusion costume makeup?
I receive a lot of requests to recreate my past looks. I have a messed up mind to begin with, so I haven’t received any requests that I would consider outside the scope of my own craziness yet.
Where did you study makeup?
I studied at Blanche Macdonald – a local makeup and beauty school here in Vancouver. I’m glad I did as the instructors were amazing and provided me the fundamentals I needed to create my illusions.
You specialize in all different kinds of makeup artistry. Is there any style that you like doing the most?
I do beauty makeup including bridal and editorial as well, however, my passion is surreal and illusion art. It gives me the chance to be the most creative and I love seeing or reading about peoples’ reactions to the finished product!
Talk to me a little bit about your demos. What can one expect when they go to one?
My demos are interactive and casual. I love speaking with fellow artists and meeting my followers. During a demo, I’ll recreate one of my popular looks or create something completely new. Often times, people are confused as to how I achieve my final looks on Instagram. My workshops allow me to demonstrate my thought process and technique as I create. I’ve received great feedback from participants and they tell me that they are excited to try out the skills they’ve learned right away.
Where do you see yourself taking your makeup in the future?
Honestly, I don’t know what I see in the future. I would love to do more collaborations with companies and other artists going forward. I have a background in teaching and would like to combine that with my passion for makeup as well. However, for now, I will just keep doing art that I love and see how it evolves over time. I don’t want to limit myself at this moment.
