“Kill them with kindness” because fighting hate with hate causes more issues and it’s better to try to live your life free of negativity and bad vibes.
The internet for any creative person is a terrific tool that helps showcase artistry on a large platform. The blessing comes along with a curse however as trolls have seemed to use this platform to execute their own agendas. I thought the High School bully’s would have just been a 4 year course, but it seems like they’ve merged courses. I had a chance to chat with Jan Garcia, a Cuban now living in Kentucky. Here is his story overcoming adversity –
– How old were you when you became interested in makeup ?
I was about 11 years old when I became interested in makeup. I also started to wear makeup when I was 11 but I definitely started to take my work more serious when I was 14.
– Run me through your first experience wearing makeup ?
First experience wearing makeup would be with my best friend she pushed me to put eyeliner at school and I got in trouble because I was a “distraction” to the students. But I started my makeup account in 2016 around December and I wasn’t really expecting it to start to grow but I’m really thankful for all the positive support I’ve been getting along the way.
– We now live in a more accepting society however in school that is often not the case. Have you had any social conflict in school ? If so, how have you overcome it ?
School definitely wasn’t my favorite place, Kids would make fun of me and would write mean stuff about me in the bathroom. I had thick skin and didn’t like showing people that their words hurt me but I started to get bullied on social media too, which was the cherry on top. I became really depressed and my grades were doing horribly. I decided that I didn’t wanna deal with any of that so I disappeared from social media and I was way too upset to show up to school. I had more stuff happen to me so I decided to start going to therapy and get the help that I needed. I went back to school and started to make more friends and surrounded myself around positive people that helped me ignore the mean stuff people said about me. But, till this day I’m a little bit sensitive and people’s opinion about me really matters to me and it’s something that in a few years won’t matter so I’m gonna try to work on ignoring negativity.
– I’ve noticed in your work there’s some dark makeup looks that have crossed over to a more neutral style, does this reflect what you’ve been going through at all ?
I used to love doing a lot of dark looks because it was part of my aesthetic but as an artist I try to push myself to do more creative looks and change up my style a lot. In a way it reflects that I’m just growing a little bit more as an artist.
– What would you say to those your age that may be going through persecution for being who they are ?
To the kids around my age going through persecution I would say that you don’t deserve any of it. When people give you hate it’s because they are intimidated by talent and hate because they are jealous and jealousy is not a good trait because honestly why be jealous when you can be supportive and nice? It’s good to “kill them with kindness” because fighting hate with hate causes more issues and it’s better to try to live your life free of negativity and bad vibes.
