Tell us a bit about how you began your artistic journey –
I was always drawing my whole life. I would design clothes from my bedroom when I was little, draw from fashion magazines and create my own catalogs. Art classes in High School lead to pursuing my dreams at The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. I went for Fashion Merchandising Management and took illustration and design classes at night.
I was always drawing for fun but I thought I was sketching to create clothes, not just sketching for the art. The ah-ha moment for me was after I created my first fashion company Rock Hard Atelier, a day to night dress line in 2009, I was doing it alone right out of college and didn’t have a team. I was kind of stuck and didn’t get the orders I needed to keep my line alive. I hit a creative block and just needed a mentor. I met Gabrielle Bernstein and she told me to just DO IT, to just draw something. I drew her as a thank you and she ended up using my art on the cover of her best selling mediation album. From then I began getting a following for my art. I focused on social media to get orders and started my second company Emily Brickel Consulting, which I still get custom orders foron my etsy account to this day.
I still love custom orders and getting to do more detailed sketches as well. That company had brought me to live sketching on paper at events in the fashion industry. For that I needed to be fast, so I trained myself to do a 3-5 minute live sketch so that I could draw the most amount of people at a party and keep the line moving. My husband would come with me and saw the emotional response guests had to my sketches. We decided we needed to get this out to the masses and developed our app and company Chic Sketch together!
Now we just celebrated 3 years in business together and are launching an anniversary phone case in our merchandise line on ChicSketchShop.com! You can also check us out at ChicSketch.com, @chicsketch on Instagram, EmilyBrickelEdelson.com and @EmilyBrickel on Instagram!
Who was your first major client & how did it make you feel?
Cartier was our first big client and honestly it felt like a dream. This to me was one of the most well-known and luxurious brands in the world and they knew who my company was, and wanted to hire us. Now, we have worked with them a second time most recently for a holiday campaign where we sketched at the NYC 5 th ave flagship for 2 major weekends in December!
What inspired you to pursue Fashion in your artistic endeavors ?
It has always been my passion since I was little. My dad was a big figure for me when I was younger who taught me about art and drawing. During that time they used to broadcast fashion shows on television and runway magazines. I was literally glued to the collections, amazed at how Karl Lagerfeld and other designers I admired could continually turn out so much creativity each show, multiple times a year. The pulse of fashion has always been something that I was aligned with. Let’s just say – I found my tribe in the fashion industry. It has always been in my veins. Glitter and fashion just run through it and at FIT and New York City I could express myself and be a part of something bigger, where fashion was more than just something superficial, it was an artistic expression of your soul.
What is a typical day for you like?
My days are different every day. Somedays I work from home with my husband and somedays we go into our Times Square office with our pup samba. Family is a big thing for me. I bring my family to work and strive to make our team feel like family. When I work from home, it’s usually because I’m working on creative projects and need to get in my zone and not be interrupted for a while. Days like that include sketching and larger creative projects. I find I get more
independent work done at home and more collaborative work done in the office. I go in usually 3 days a week and work with my team for creative direction, graphic design, marketing, strategy, sales and social. Every day, wherever I am, whether I’m working from home, at the office, at fashion week, off site at a work trip or on vacation I’m constantly communicating with my team when they need my feedback and approvals via skype and emails.
How do you translate luxury into your sketches?
I think luxury is a feeling. To me, luxury feels glamorous, it feels like comfort, something sumptuousness, plush, delicious, rich and like a treat. In sketches, luxury can be rich colors, stark contrasts, beautiful fabrics. It can be translated into the posture of the figure I’m sketching, the emotion they are feeling, the pleasure and satisfaction they feel enjoying their surroundings. Also adding texture and depth is important to create luxury. It doesn’t have to be “more is more” it can be all about the specific, curated and edited key elements, where it’s more about what is hidden or omitted rather than what is on display.
When did you know that this was your calling?
For fashion being my calling it was probably when I pranced around in my mom’s heels as a toddler, refused to wear anything casual and started calling myself a fashionista before my peers had ever heard the word. But really, for when I knew fashion illustration was my calling, I would say it was seeing that emotional reaction and connection people had to seeing my sketches. It means a lot to me that I could touch someone’s life in a positive way just by experiencing my artwork. It’s that vibe, that deep knowing and feeling of excitement that is an undeniable sign when you are on the right path. That’s how you know. It’s like finding a soulmate!
Where do you see yourself taking this form of artistry in the future?
This girl’s got big dreams and a huge ambition. There are so many things I still want to do, from writing more illustrated books, creating more companies, and finding new ways to excite and delight my customers. The world is your oyster if you focus on how you can serve and how you can give back.
