Let me run you through my personal experience with the extraordinary men Johnny De Piper & James Freeman of Sally Roots, Featherweight Brooklyn, & Sweet Science…
Before I even had the pleasure of meeting this dynamic duo, I casually mentioned to a dear friend of mine while travelling in New York City that I was having a craving for authentic Caribbean cuisine. Little did I know, this Marketing Professional friend of mine would go out of his way to find the best spot in Brooklyn for my home-cravings at a restaurant known only as Sally Roots. We ended up dining there on a low-key night with a mutual friend from Eritrea. We were all impressed by the cuisine right away! I was particularly in awe because I had never before seen Johnny Cakes (a delectable of Sint Maarten) on a foreign menu. So my friends & I ate, we laughed, & before leaving I decided to grab the contact details of the masterminds behind this Caribbean, American BBQ spot! So it begins…
I contacted them by E-Mail, explaining how much I appreciated the authenticity of their food & how I’d wanted to have a proper meet-&-greet with the dream team behind the brand. I get a phone call from one of the Founders, James Freeman, & immediately understood that he was a burst of energy over the phone. He’s a native of St. Croix, but with a true NYC accent from Brooklyn. Anyway after swapping from our Caribbean accents back & forth, we setup a time on a Tuesday AFTERNOON to meet at Sally Roots to discuss a feature with The 7th Magazine. This is where the bonafide experience officially begun…
I arrive late, in true Caribbean fashion… not on purpose, but due to the L train consecutively taking L’s with their constant train delays. Luckily they hadn’t arrived yet, so I innocently start prepping to take notes as I am nerdy & accustomed to mostly listening while not speaking. Meanwhile, everyone around me is trying to forewarn me about the treat that I’m in for. Unaware & unprepared, I shrugged it off with a smile thinking —-> it’s only 4pm…on a Tuesdayyyy… What could possibly happen?
A grand entrance by the both of them just minutes after I’d sat down with my notepad open & pen in hand —> MADD’ professional yo (in my best NYC accent). They introduce themselves to me by breaking the ice with a shot of rum. We all cheers & I immediately delve into it. In true journalistic fashion, I’m inquiring & jotting down answers to questions on how they’d Founded the brand, asking follow up questions based on the previous answers they’d given, processing the information & figuring out what would be most engaging to my audience. ‘MADD’ professional yo…
By the way, in between all of this, I’d had 3 shots within a 20 minute time frame with them. SO, they invite me for some food & we down 3 bottles of wine. Clearly, at this point my notepad is closed, pen is put down, & my full attention is in swing as I am intrigued by how these men survive this lifestyle.
Little did I know, this was just the beginning of the night & I was all for it! I haven’t had that much fun since the most memorable nights out with my favorite dapper gentleman of Dubai at Little Black Door.
So we’re off to the second location, Lady’s, which is also one of their masterpieces. I committed to being lifelong friends with them in the car while on our way there & everything is pretty much in bullet-point form from then. Here is how it was recapped to me by order of occurence:
- Arrived to venue, immediately greeted by another shot of all the rums
- I’m offered champagne, chugged it like Fiji Water
- I demand Disaronno on the Rocks (my signature drink) from the Bar Manager while spilling my second glass of champagne in my other hand, which sounded like something I’ve done before #notFakeNews
- I become feisty with Johnny & James, which also sounds like something I’d do, so I’m offered another shot
- 11 Lyft rides are called for me to go home, which I refused to get into any because & I quote “It’s cold out there, I’m not going out there.” Legitimately, totally sounds precisely like something I’d say & do.
IT WAS 8PM, ON A TUESDAY!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, moral of the story is that Sally Roots will be listed on The 7th Magazine’s Top 7 List of the best nightlife experience in NYC come 2018. Professional journalistic details to be released in accordance to my recovery…
