“We love to play. Fashion is meant to make you feel good.”
Monzlapur is an amazing fashion brand, mixing vintage with a modern day look. Starting out from young, Monzlapur built herself up to eventually bring her brand to New York Fashion Week, a major achievement. Here’s what she said in this exclusive interview-
Who inspired you to take up fashion as a career?
My mom was definitely a big inspiration from a young age. She would always dress up with some experimental pieces during my childhood. She was not afraid to stand out and that gave me confidence from a young age to express myself with statement pieces. We loved going to discover little shops and specialty boutiques together. She also had her own embroidery business and had a beautiful curation fabrics from Europe and the Middle East that we would use together to design our dresses for family occasions .
Where did you come up with the name Monzlapur?
Monz originated from my name Mona. Lapur came from “la pure” in French, which means “the pure”. Monzlapur is therefore my design aesthetic at its purest form.
What was it like studying in both London and Boston?
Then living in London was were I realized that was my calling. All of a sudden I was in a walking city were I was exposed to seeing so much character everyday everywhere. The subway was also a big part of it.
London was very vibrant full of life and almost distracting to study. and it was also there that I realized there! I was studying biochemistry at Kings College and I always wanted to explore.
Talk to me some more about Flying Solo. Where did the concept first originate?
Flying Solo is a project that originated a little over a year ago. Myself and some other independent designers were doing a pop up shop together in Soho NY, and felt a desire together to have a more permanent location for us to nurture and grow. A space were other designers too can pop in and our and get a space to interact with customers full on. A year later our project is receiving a lot of interest and we are now home to 68 local and international fashion brands.
How was New York Fashion Week? It’s an amazing opportunity!
Yes it was a wonderful opportunity. The power of the collective is what made our show this year reach a new peak. It was hard work and lots of late nights and all came together much better than we imagined. I showed 8 curated looks from Monzlapur’s Fall Collection which is now available for purchase at Flying Solo or through our Instagram @monzlapur.ny. This was also the first time we included men in our show which I was pretty excited about.
Talk to me a little about you style. It’s something that so different and unique! how did you come up with this idea?
My style is quite playful and bounces back and forth between feminine and androgynous shapes and details. I love royalty details such as cuffs and collars from fashion history and incorporate them into modern silhouettes. Our Hooded sweatshirt is a great example. We took a silhouettes that is modern and thought “what if shakespeare’s were to wear this, how would it it look like?” So we made it out of sheer linen and silk , gave it some cuffs and an oversized hood. We love to play. Fashion is meant to make you feel good.
Where do you hope to bring Monzlapur in the future?
I would definitely love to increases accessibility to our clothing across the globe. I am also looking forward to collaborating with other designers and artists on projects. Definitely want to keep experimenting and pushing myself to new design heights.
