“…It’s a fundamental role in my life, not because it’s my work but because if has an impact on everything I do, everything I think. It’s my center.”
Cindy Monteiro is a 26 year old visionary. She created her own brand of clothing so true to herself, you could spot it from a mile away. Being born in Switzerland, she developed her style from her roots, and stuck true to herself. This is what she has to say when we spoke to her after New York Fashion Week-
When did you decide you wanted to design clothes?
I dreamed about it since I was a little girl. I have sketches from when I was 7 years old, always loved the fact of creating and visualizing clothes for people. But I really decide to do it seriously at the age of 22 years old. And it’s a fundamental role in my life, not because it’s my work but because if has an impact on everything I do, everything I think. It’s my center.
How would you describe your style?
I can’t find one world or one category to describe my style. I think that it’s a bit like my personality: contrasted, true, simple and elegant.
Was there anyone who inspired your fashion sense?
Yes, I have my mom, my aunts that always loved fashion, so just like every little girl I wanted to look like my mother. With age I started to feel different from my colleagues, I believe I was searching myself so I went to a very clean, classy look, to rebelled/gothic, then I went to very sexy looks, and then it came what I am today. A mix of all those contrarieties.
What was it like working with Michelle Obama?
The Cape Verdean First Lady Ex. Ligia Dias Fonseca, who I work with asked for a present for Michelle Obama. I designed her a gorgeous dress that was given to her as a present.
Explain more about your EVASAO collection?
Evasao collection was all about escaping! It was about seeing and expressing the nature with other eyes. Different tones and shapes you can find in each environment. You can find, different prints some more “hot” others more “cold”, and different fabrics, which will lead you to remember the roughness of the country, but also some of the softness. You can find it in the mixture of materials and the use of contract colors. In each garment you can find one part of the nature and identity.
