Artistic Director Pablo del Val Talks Art Dubai
Art Dubai is an international art fair that takes place every year in March. Displaying work from over 40 countries, it is the most diverse art fair in the world. Recently, Art Dubai underwent a structural change. It is now jointly led by Artistic Director Pablo del Val and International Director Chloe Vaitsou. Together, they are transforming the fair into an even more dynamic and global event. In this exclusive interview, The 7th Magazine’s blog, Luxury Chapters, talks to Pablo del Val about love of art and Art Dubai.
- Where did your interest in art begin?
I come from a family with a long tradition with the arts. My grandparents were old master collectors and my grandmother, Maria Luisa Caturla, was the main expert on Francisco de Zurbaran and a member of several museum boards like the Prado Museum. I studied in Madrid and London and since then have worked in most of the different facets of the art world. I’ve directed several galleries, had my own art consulting firm, directed two art fairs in Mexico and was the founder-director and curator of La Conservera, an art centre in Murcia, Spain.
- What drew you to the directing side of the art world?
I think it stems really from personal challenge and the need to always be striving for change. Directing always presents itself with new challenges, and the opportunity to really grow and develop something.
- How has Art Dubai benefited from moving away from having a single fair director?
That’s a great question! Chloe Vaitsou was appointed International Director in December, joining Art Dubai joined in with over a decade’s experience of working with private collectors in different capacities and as former Head of Audience Development for Frieze Fairs. Her role is to develop the fair’s global profile and positioning, developing global networks and key commercial, institutional and non-profit partnerships. We work very much side-by-side, I on the artistic direction of the fair and with the galleries, and our skill-sets and backgrounds complement each other.
- What is the thought process behind choosing which artists will be showcased in Art Dubai?
The process starts with an application. All galleries must apply to be part of our two main gallery sections – Art Dubai Contemporary and Art Dubai Modern – and from there we have selection committees for both sections who review each application.Once approved, we then work closely with each gallery to review the artists and artworks they would like to bring to the fair.
- You’ve said that “every fair has its own energy.” How would you describe the energy of Art Dubai?
If I were to sum up in three words, I’d choose upbeat, inclusive http://luxurychapters.com/kintsugi-yoga-studio/and community driven. Upbeat as our energy is positive both in the work that we do to stage Art Dubai each year and, like Dubai itself, future-facing and optimistic. As the world’s most globally diverse international fair, we’re proud to be inclusive and community-driven. We reach all corners of the world – this year over 40 countries will participate – and strive to provide original content at the fair to reach to a wide audience. Art Dubai is not just for collectors of art and arts professionals but for culturally-curious, families and young people interested to dip a toe into the arts with its talks and workshops, performances and after-dark music programme, commissions and special projects.
Art Dubai is a fair with a vision to excel at the local and international level and to continually improve in order to do so with rich inclusiveness. If you have the chance to attend or contribute, don’t miss out.
