Arawole Oluwatobi has a unique style when it comes to photography. Each piece that is presented gleams with life. Below, Oluwatobi discusses photography and its qualities.
What do you hope to capture in your photographs?
Based on my line of photography, “editorials,” I have come to understand how pictures are being connected to human feelings by telling different stories. Each time I shoot and work on a picture, my only hope is to be able to capture the heart and mind of my viewers in a valuable way.
When photographing people, what features do you wish to highlight?
The qualities of a good photograph will be most appreciated when the following elements are well included in the picture: lighting/exposure, positioning, color/tone and the positive determination you are putting to your photographs, I always like to make sure this elements are well placed and make them agree to one beautiful and amazing picture.
Along with people, what else do you like taking pictures of?
Nature itself is an art form, so sometimes I just take my time to wander around God’s creations like the blue sky with different pattern everyday. Sometimes it comes with a little of another color, which simply adds beauty to it. I take my time to gaze at the leaves, flowers and sometimes waterfalls. So along with people, I am a big fan of nature.
Do your photos tell their own stories? What stories do they tell?
I think really good photographs are timeless. As we all know, one picture has a thousand, if not millions, of ways to define it, so I tend to pass my pictures around to people. First, considering the current situation or trends of my environment or the city; second, my pictures speak of creativity by appreciating every form of humanity, regardless their colors; third, my pictures speak details and motivations; details in the sense that other photographers will be able to benefit from the way I composed the whole pictures and motivation in the sense that my viewers will always see millions of reasons to appreciate themselves through one picture.
Along with photography, what else do you enjoy?
Oh, best of all I enjoy traveling. I hope in the future to travel to different countries and I can’t wait for my own documentations in those places.
What do you tell your subjects before you take a photo?
Before taking the photo, I like to create a very friendly gesture with my subject and make them feel free. I was able to understand the power of music and sounds, how they work with human feelings and mood, so I just flow with their tunes and tell them to see a reflection of themselves in the camera, so they should give their best.
What do you hope to accomplish as a photographer in the future?
I hope to touch people’s lives with my pictures. I hope to be able to influence more upcoming photographers into being great. I just want to create a useful standard in life, that my works will be recognized all over the globe, like one voice and “I am a photographer because it is my one true love.”
